What The Mouse That Roared Is About
The Duchy of Grand Fenwick, the smallest country in Europe, is facing ruin because an American imitation has taken over the market for its only export, wine. The prime minister finds the solution: declare war on the United States, lose immediately, and take a share of the aid the victor gives defeated nations. Twenty men in armour go to New York and the plan collapses, because they win. Jack Arnold adapted Leonard Wibberley's novel. Peter Sellers plays three parts at once: the duchess, the prime minister and the incompetent man commanding the army. The satire aims straight at Cold War deterrence logic and leaves nothing untouched. Who it is for: viewers who like British satire and Sellers. Who it is not for: anyone wanting the pace of modern comedy.
