Red Sundown

The hired gun Alex Longmire promises to give up the work after the man who saved his life in a shootout is killed. Finding a job in the first town he rides into is not easy; the only opening is as deputy to Sheriff Jade Murphy. Murphy is an honest man, caught between the small farmers and the big cattle owner of the district. Longmire decides to stay and to use his gun a different way this time. Jack Arnold's eighty one minute Universal western uses the most familiar shape in the genre: a man who wants to leave his past behind and a past that will not leave him. Arnold is actually known for his science fiction films; he carries the same pace and economy over into a western here. Rory Calhoun plays Longmire, Dean Jagger the sheriff and Martha Hyer his daughter. Grant Williams is the young gunman on the other side.
