No Name on the Bullet

A man everyone recognises arrives in a small town: John Gant, a gunman who kills for money. He tells nobody why he has come, threatens nobody, and waits at the hotel. Everyone in town starts believing they are the target, and panic spreads without a single shot. Jack Arnold directed. Audie Murphy plays Gant. The idea is violence working without occurring: everyone with something on their conscience remembers it, and the town devours itself. Murphy plays it entirely calm; the man barely raises his voice and the silence produces the threat. It is a low-budget Universal western running around seventy-five minutes, and even so it became one of the most reassessed examples of the genre. The film is almost all conversation; the shootout comes at the end and is very short. Who it is for: viewers who like psychological westerns and low-budget genre films. Who it is not for: anyone expecting action; the film is about waiting.
