What Man on High Heels Is About
In Man on High Heels, Cha Seung-won plays a detective projecting a tough, idealized masculine image who is secretly taking estrogen injections in preparation for gender transition. Critics praised the film for playing with crime genre clichés while balancing humor and sensitivity, and singled out Cha Seung-won's performance, though the same critics noted the director's grasp of trans representation was uneven. Around the film's release, director Jang Jin drew controversy in the Korean press for a comment suggesting most trans people he'd spoken with had started out as gay. Who it's for: anyone curious about a South Korean film that plays with crime genre clichés while tackling gender identity, even with its own contested approach to representation. Who it's not for: viewers wanting flawless, uncontroversial trans representation.
