What Manson: Music from an Unsound Mind Is About
The documentary is about Charles Manson’s obsession with becoming a rock star, how he moved through the Los Angeles music scene of the sixties, and the people who took up his songs, with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys and the producer Terry Melcher at the centre. It includes pieces of the recordings Manson made at the Gold Star studio in 1967. This has to be said plainly: in August 1969 people around Manson murdered seven people in Los Angeles, Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Parent, and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. The film draws a line between his failure in music and the murders; it is worth watching aware that an account of this shape sits close to presenting a murderer as a thwarted artist. Tom O’Dell directed.
