An old soldier helps a small boy whose mother has been carried off to a magical kingdom beneath a remote Russian lake, and the two of them go down under the water. Aleksandr Rou's 1959 film comes from the acknowledged master of Soviet fairy tale cinema, building the folk story out of sets, costume and trick effects. The underwater kingdom, the talking animals and the cunning old soldier are fixtures of that tradition. At seventy four minutes it is made for children without hiding the harder edge of the tale. Georgi Millyar, Rou's indispensable villain, is in the cast again.
