What The Humpbacked Horse Is About
A man whose beloved is carried off by the tsar sets out to get her back. He has a single helper with him: a small, humpbacked, talking horse. Along the way impossible tasks are set and tests are laid, and each time the answer comes from the horse. The film rests on a Russian folk account and keeps to the tale’s own logic to the end; nothing unreasonable is explained, it is simply accepted. The staging and the costumes carry the form of Soviet fairy tale cinema of the period. Pyotr Aleynikov plays the lead in Aleksandr Rou’s sixty nine minute Soviet film, completed in 1941.
