What Kashchey the Immortal Is About
Aleksandr Rou's 1944 Soviet film comes out of Russian folk tales. Before she will marry him, Marya Morevna sets the warrior Nikita Kozhemyaka three riddles. Before he can give the answers, the country is overrun by the armies of Kashchey the Immortal; Marya is taken and Nikita finds his home in ashes. A wizard he meets on the road gives him a cap that makes him unseen, and the search begins. The film was made in the last year of the war, and for its audience the invading figure in the tale had an unmistakable present-day counterpart. Georgi Millyar, who plays Kashchey, became one of the best-known faces in Soviet children's cinema.
