What Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors Is About
Olya is tidy, careful and a little pleased with herself. One day, looking into a mirror, she passes into her own reflection and finds Yalo there: a twin whose name is hers spelled backwards and whose habits run backwards too. The two of them land in the Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors, where every mirror distorts what is in front of it, the king governs by lying, and children who tell the truth are locked up. This is how Olya learns to see herself from outside. Aleksandr Rou's children's film is one of the well-known works of Soviet fairy-tale cinema. Olya and Yalo are played by the twin sisters Olga and Tatyana Yukina. Underneath the fairy tale it says something about a society's capacity to manufacture a false reality for itself.
