Lev Potyomkin What Vasilisa the Beautiful Is About
Despite the title, the film adapts the tale usually known as The Frog Princess rather than the Vasilisa story it is named after. A father sends his three sons out to find brides; the two older ones come back with ordinary girls, and the youngest, Ivanushka, comes back with a frog he found in the marshes. The frog is Vasilisa, cursed into that shape by a serpent whose proposal she refused, and undoing the curse falls to Ivanushka. Aleksandr Rou made it for Soyuzdetfilm and it opened on 13 May 1940, running seventy-two minutes and standing out as one of the first Soviet films to let the fantastic in at a time when socialist realism set the terms. Georgy Millyar, Sergey Stolyarov and Lev Potyomkin head the cast.
