Mariana's Room

Emmanuel Finkiel's 2025 film tells the story of Yulia and her son Hugo, escaping a Ukrainian ghetto during the Second World War. The mother entrusts the boy to her friend Mariana, who lives in a brothel; Hugo spends months inside a wardrobe and learns the world through the gap in its door. The formal choice is to take that constraint seriously: much of the story is built from the child's limited field of view, with the outside given through sound. That keeps danger constantly present without showing it. Mélanie Thierry's Mariana does not fall into the template of a rescuer; the woman's own life and risk are inside the story. The subject is heavy and the pace slow. Who it's for: viewers interested in the history of the Holocaust and formally rigorous drama. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding sexual content and the violence of war, or wanting a fast narrative.
