Mauricio de Sousa: The Movie

Pedro Vasconcelos's 2025 Brazilian film covers the early years of the comics artist Mauricio de Sousa. He comes from a small town, works as a crime reporter at a newspaper and tries to find time to draw. The subject is work finding its recognition. De Sousa's characters were not taken seriously for years; comics were not counted as a profession in Brazil, and the narrative shows that process of acceptance in detail. The artist's own son plays the lead, and that choice also indicates the family-approved nature of the production. The narrative does not enter contested passages and the tone is celebratory; the period design builds the fifties and sixties in detail. Who it's for: those interested in the history of comics and Brazilian popular culture. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical biography; the film stays with its subject's own account.
