May Who?

Chayanop Boonprakob's 2015 Thai film sets a strange idea inside a high school romance. When May's heart rate rises her body produces electricity, shocking everything around her the moment she is excited, so she cannot go near anyone. Falling for the popular boy at school, she asks her classmate Pong to help her get it under control, and he has an unrequited love of his own. The film uses its fantastical element as an obstacle and gives direct visual form to the feeling of a body going out of control in adolescence. The story follows the familiar shape of Thai youth films: school, a group of friends, misunderstandings and feelings understood at the last moment. The tone is light, the pace high and the effects are used for humour. Who it's for: viewers who like youth romantic comedy and Thai cinema. Who it's not for: anyone looking for an unexpected plot; the film takes the familiar road.
