The Red Envelope

Chayanop Boonprakob's 2025 Thai comedy builds its story on a folk belief of Chinese origin: whoever picks up a red envelope left in the road is considered married to someone who has died. Menn is a small-time thief, and the moment he takes the envelope he finds himself bound for life to a ghost called Titi. The only way out of the marriage is to uncover the truth behind Titi's death, and the two begin investigating together. The film joins comedy to a ghost story and follows the conventions Thai popular cinema uses often in this mode, while building the relationship between its two male leads without making it the joke. The pace is high and the humour aimed wide. It did well at home. Who it's for: viewers who like Thai comedy and light films about ghosts. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a consistent mystery and a measured tone; the film uses exaggeration deliberately.
