Suck Seed

Ped knows nothing about music in school, but when his childhood crush Ern moves back to town he decides to start a band. He and his friends pick up instruments and try to learn to play. The problem is that Ern is genuinely a good guitarist, and when she joins the band both the music and the rivalry change. The girl is the reason Ped is learning guitar, and her being in the band complicates everything. Chayanop Boonprakob works the familiar shapes of Thai youth comedy: broad jokes, adolescent embarrassment, and nostalgic 1990s Thai pop. The rehearsal scenes are the best passages, with the comedy of playing badly worked at length. Jirayu La-ongmanee plays Ped and Nattasha Nauljam plays Ern. Who it's for: Viewers who like Thai youth comedy, band-forming stories, and nostalgic music films. Who it's not for: The humour is broad and repetitive and it runs long. The emotional resolution also arrives in familiar shapes.
