Mexican Bus Ride

Oliverio has just married. On the wedding night word comes: his mother is dying. A lawyer is needed to draw up her will, and the lawyer is in a distant town. Oliverio leaves his wife and gets on a bus. The journey starts normally and then nothing stays normal: the bus stops for a birthday celebration, a one-legged man is found writhing in the mud, the road goes under water. There is also Raquel on the bus; she will not leave Oliverio alone, and his dreams take shape accordingly. It is a film from Luis Buñuel's Mexican period and runs eighty minutes. The mould is a road comedy, but as in every Buñuel film the dream sequences seep into the telling; death, sex and religion stand side by side in the same scene. The story is in no hurry and is not interested in reaching its destination at all. It is among the director's lightest works.
