What Michael Madana Kama Rajan Is About
Singeetam Srinivasa Rao's 1990 Tamil film is about four brothers separated at birth. One grows up beside their father as a wealthy businessman, one becomes a fireman, one a cook and one a thug; all four are played by Kamal Haasan, each with a distinct way of speaking, walking and joking. Their paths crossing while they know nothing of one another sets off a chain of misunderstandings, and from this the film builds one of the densest examples of mistaken-identity comedy. The dialogue is by Crazy Mohan and is among the most quoted writing in the Tamil tradition of wordplay. Technically, putting the same actor in four roles inside one frame was demanding for its time. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil comedy and Kamal Haasan. Who it's not for: anyone watching with subtitles; much of the humour depends on the language.
