Mozart and the Whale

Donald has Asperger's syndrome, thinks in numbers and drives a taxi, and he runs a small support group for people with the same diagnosis. Isabelle joins the group and the two fall in love. The trouble is that they perceive the world with the same intensity but in completely different ways: Donald wants order and Isabelle dismantles it. Petter Næss made the film from Ronald Bass's screenplay, drawn from the lives of Jerry and Mary Newport. Josh Hartnett and Radha Mitchell play them. The story promises no cure and asks instead whether two people can learn to make room for each other. The title comes from a costume party. Who it is for: viewers who like romantic drama built on neurological difference. Who it is not for: anyone applying today's standards of representation, since the film speaks in the language of 2005.
