What My Father Marianne Is About
Hanna grew up in a small Swedish town and has her life more or less in order. One day her father tells her what he has kept to himself for a long time: he knows himself to be a woman and will live from now on under the name Marianne. Her father is also the town's priest. Hanna has to deal with her own reaction and with the town's at the same time. Mårten Klingberg's Swedish film is loosely adapted from the book in which Ester Roxberg wrote about her own father. Rolf Lassgård plays Marianne and Hedda Stiernstedt plays Hanna. The telling makes nobody the villain: the church is not condemned wholesale, and the daughter's difficulty is not belittled either. Comedy and feeling sit together; the tone is warm and never coarse.
