Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal

P. Padmarajan's 1986 Malayalam film follows Solomon, who falls in love with his new neighbour Sofia. The feeling is returned quickly; but the situation in her house is heavier than it appears, and her stepfather is at the centre of it. The film keeps its romantic line while hiding none of the violence. The narrative does not build Sofia as someone to be rescued; she makes her own decisions, and Solomon's faith is tested in the process. Mohanlal and Shari lead, with Thilakan as the stepfather. It is adapted from a novel. Padmarajan's cinema is known for treating desire and violence together, and this is among the best known examples of that strain. Who it's for: those who like classic Malayalam drama. Who it's not for: viewers for whom sexual abuse and violence would sit heavily; the film takes them as direct subjects.
