Nandanam

Balamani works as a maid in a house and is a devotee of Guruvayurappan; she falls in love with Manu, the grandson of the household. When the family sets itself against the match, Balamani begs her god to let her forget him. From there the film blurs the line between the real and the believed and moves into something like a fable, and the real subject is not love but who decides the course of a servant’s life. Ranjith wrote and directed, drawing loosely on M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s Neelathamara. Navya Nair plays Balamani and Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Manu, with Revathi, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Siddique and Innocent in the cast. It opened on 20 December 2002, took four Kerala State Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards South, and was remade in Tamil as Seedan.
