What Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha Is About
At the end of the fifties a young woman called Manikyam is found dead in the village of Paleri in northern Kerala. Her husband’s family say she had a seizure, but the examination shows it was a killing; three villagers are charged, and the court finds the case against them too weak and releases them all. The file stays closed for fifty two years. Haridas, an investigator living in Delhi, goes back to the village to find the truth, and what comes out is the sexual violence behind the killing that nobody in the village would speak about, and the impunity of the man who owned the land. Mammootty plays three separate parts. Ranjith’s hundred and fifty five minute Malayalam film was adapted from a novel and completed in 2009.
