Indian Rupee

Jayaprakash is an unemployed young man who plans to get into real estate in Kozhikode and make money fast. In those years the city runs on buying and selling land: nobody is buying to live in, they are buying to sell. Jayaprakash learns the arrangement. Then he meets an old man, Achutha Menon, and has to think about where the money he makes comes from. Ranjith wrote and directed the film, which takes the Kerala property bubble directly as its subject and won the national award for best Malayalam feature in 2011. Prithviraj Sukumaran takes the lead; Thilakan, near the end of his career, plays one of his most discussed parts. The telling does not treat making money as a crime; it asks who loses.
