What No Greater Glory Is About
In Budapest a group of boys wage a mock war against a rival gang over a vacant lot, and a frail boy struggles to be accepted inside that arrangement. Directed by Frank Borzage, the film was adapted from Ferenc Molnár’s novel The Boys of Paul Street and took its impulse from the League of Nations disarmament conference that failed between 1932 and 1934. Borzage and his writer Jo Swerling make the antiwar case openly: the film opens with footage of the First World War, and some of the adults in it have lost limbs to that war. It did no business. France banned it as inopportune, while at Venice in 1935 it was given a prize for the most artistically successful foreign film.
