What No Place on Earth Is About
In 1993 Chris Nicola, a New York police officer and caver, was exploring two caves in Ukraine when he found signs that people had lived there for a long time. Years of research eventually brought out the story: during the Second World War thirty-eight Jews, members of three families, had gone underground to escape the Nazi killings and lived there for months. Janet Tobias's documentary rests on the survivors' own accounts. Some of them go back to the caves today as old people. The telling produces neither horror nor heroism; it describes how water, food, darkness and the moment of going outside were all calculated. It is one of the longest underground survivals on record, and it went untold for decades.
