What Of Human Hearts Is About
Clarence Brown's film is set before and during the American Civil War. Ethan Wilkins is a poor and honest preacher; his son Jason wants to become a doctor, that is, to work on the body where his father works on the soul. The conflict between them is not simply a choice of profession: the father raises the boy under a hard discipline, and the film neither excuses that hardness nor explains it away. When Jason breaks with home it is the mother who carries the weight, and the centre of the film shifts steadily toward her. Walter Huston plays the preacher, James Stewart the grown son and Beulah Bondi the mother. It is an unusually merciless portrait of a father for a family melodrama of the 1930s.
