What Once Upon a Time, There Was a King... Is About
A king who considers himself superior to everyone asks his three daughters how much they love him. The two eldest talk about gold and jewels. The youngest, Maruska, says she loves him as much as salt. Taking this as an insult, he throws her out of the castle and orders every grain of salt in the kingdom destroyed. Then the kitchens stop, the food turns inedible, and he learns what salt is the hardest possible way. It comes from Bozena Nemcova's tale about salt being worth more than gold. Borivoj Zeman directed, and Jan Werich both played the king and co-wrote the script. It is a fixture of Czech children's cinema, and it never lectures; it simply lets the king make a fool of himself in public.
