The Proud Princess

A proud princess, and a father who is a kind but useless king. The young king of the neighbouring country wants to marry her and she refuses him. So he hides who he is, takes a job as the gardener at her castle, and slowly shows her what a life actually consists of. When things turn, the two of them have to flee the palace and take shelter in the houses of ordinary people along the way. Borivoj Zeman's film is one of the founding works of Czech fairy-tale cinema and is counted among the most watched films the country has made. The shape is entirely classical and the handling is warm: it does not punish the pride, it changes it by acquaintance. It ran on television for generations and is still among the films shown every Christmas in the Czech Republic.
