Before the Premier League and the enormous salaries, football was a dirty word in England: the game had lost its standing and its supporters were spoken of as hooligans. Then came the 1990 World Cup. For Bobby Robson, permanently in the sights of the press, and for a squad written off as donkeys, it was a chance at redemption, and over six weeks they united the country and went out on penalties to West Germany at the Stadio delle Alpi in Turin on 4 July, one step from the final. James Erskine made the documentary from Pete Davies’s book All Played Out, with Gary Oldman narrating, setting previously unseen material alongside the match footage, from Platt’s last-minute winner against Belgium to Gascoigne’s play and Lineker’s finishing.
