What The Battle of the Sexes Is About
Billie Jean King won twelve Grand Slam titles, but the match everyone still talks about was played in 1973 against Bobby Riggs, a former men's champion who called himself a male chauvinist and claimed that at fifty five he could still beat any woman alive. The documentary assembles the period out of archive: Riggs playing Margaret Court first and winning, then the meeting at the Houston Astrodome, still the most watched tennis match ever played. James Erskine and Zara Hayes are less interested in the tennis than in the argument around it, and in what the equality debate looked like that year.
