What Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution Is About
Page Hurwitz's 2024 documentary is about the history of queer stand-up in the United States. It covers what going on stage has meant across a span reaching from the seventies to the present. The argument is the cost of visibility. Performing openly in the early period meant lost work and threats; the narrative treats this alongside the craft of the joke and shows how the comedians set their own limits. Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes and Tig Notaro speak. Archive material takes wide space; the documentary moves towards a single night's show and closes with it. Who it's for: those who follow the history of stand-up and queer culture. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical assessment; the documentary is largely celebratory.
