What Over the Fence Is About
A divorced and closed-off man moves to Hakodate and enrols in a vocational college to learn carpentry; more or less everyone in the class is in the same position. At a hostess bar he goes to with the others he meets a woman unlike anyone he knows, and something starts between them. The film does not present this as romantic rescue; it leaves two damaged people holding on to each other as they are. Nobuhiro Yamashita directed, from the writing of Yasushi Sato, and the film counts as the last part of the Hakodate trilogy drawn from his work. Joe Odagiri and Yu Aoi lead. It opened on 17 September 2016.
