What Tamako in Moratorium Is About
Tamako finished university in Tokyo and moved back into her father's house in Kofu. She is not looking for work. She does nothing around the house. Her days go on eating, sleeping, reading manga and watching television. Her father runs a sports shop and says nothing to her; he simply waits. The film watches the same house across four seasons: summer, autumn, winter, spring. Nothing happens, and precisely because of that something changes. Nobuhiro Yamashita directs the Japanese film; seventy-eight minutes, with Atsuko Maeda as Tamako. Maeda had recently left a large pop group, and this part set the direction of her later work. The film proceeds in a small city, with few scenes and almost no incident.
