The Drudgery Train

Tokyo at the end of the eighties. Kanta is nineteen and has no money, no friends and no girlfriend. A crime committed by his father broke up the family when he was a child, and he himself stopped studying after junior high and began working as a day labourer. The money never stays in his hands, and he lies to avoid paying rent. When he becomes friends with Shoji, an educated new recruit at the works, something starts to shift and he manages to speak to Yasuko. But old habits and a simple piece of jealousy are enough to ruin all of it. It was adapted from the prize winning novel by Kenta Nishimura. Mirai Moriyama plays the lead in Nobuhiro Yamashita’s hundred and fourteen minute Japanese film, completed in 2012.
