Paloma

Marcelo Gomes's 2022 Brazilian film follows Paloma, who works on a papaya plantation. She has been saving for a long time, and all she wants is a traditional wedding in church with her boyfriend Zé. The priest refuses to marry them. Paloma is a trans woman, and the refusal sets her against everyone she knows; the narrative does not turn this into the language of a rights campaign but gives it as the stubbornness of one woman. Kika Sena leads. It was shot in the countryside with local people in the surrounding roles. There is violence, but the scene is not drawn out. Who it's for: viewers of Brazilian cinema and portraits of stubborn characters. Who it's not for: viewers for whom scenes of violence against a trans woman would be difficult.
