What Pavements Is About

Pavements is written, directed, and co-produced by Alex Ross Perry, braiding together the band's real 2022 reunion tour with a scripted fake Hollywood biopic called "Range Life" starring Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus, an original stage musical called "Enchanted!" staged at New York's Sheen Center, and a touring "Pavement Museum" exhibit mixing real and fabricated artifacts, deliberately blurring what's true throughout. It premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival before a staggered 2025 US rollout across New York, Los Angeles, and a wider release. Who it's for: fans of experimental music cinema that dismantles the documentary form to match its subject's irony. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a straightforward, conventional reunion tour documentary about the band, since the film knowingly scrambles fact and fabrication.
