Perfect Strangers

Rako Prijanto's 2022 Indonesian film is an adaptation of the Italian Perfetti sconosciuti. Seven friends at a dinner decide to play a game: the phones go on the table and every message and every call will be opened in front of everyone. What makes the adaptation interesting is which secrets were localised. Some of the matters in the original are carried here into an Indonesian social context, where religion, family expectation and social standing take on different weight. It shows how differently the same skeleton can resolve. The film takes place almost entirely in one location and its pace depends on dialogue. The cast is drawn from well-known Indonesian names. The adaptation stays faithful to the original, so nothing surprises anyone who has seen it. Who it's for: those who like single-location ensemble drama. Who it's not for: viewers who have seen the original; the plot is very nearly identical.
