What Polar Bear Is About
A female polar bear in the Arctic becomes a mother for the first time and has to raise her cubs in a world where the ice is going. The film sets her present against her own cubhood: what her mother taught her, how thick the ice was then, and what she is facing now. The ice she needs in order to hunt freezes later every year and breaks up earlier. Alastair Fothergill and Jeff Wilson directed; the pair had made Penguins for Disneynature before this. Catherine Keener narrates. It keeps the texture of a wildlife film and folds the climate argument into the story rather than stopping to deliver it.
