What Pretty Red Dress Is About
Dionne Edwards's 2023 British film follows Travis, just out of prison. Everything has changed at home; his girlfriend Candice is auditioning for a musical and their daughter Kenisha is struggling at school. Travis secretly wears the red dress bought for Candice. The film does not build toward a scene of disclosure; the narrative shows how the expectation of manhood works inside the family and the neighbourhood, and puts no label on Travis. Alexandra Burke and Natey Jones lead. The music does work inside the narrative. There is violence, but it is kept brief. Who it's for: viewers of British independent cinema and family-centred drama. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a final answer; the film leaves its character undefined.
