What Princess Raccoon Is About
Prince Amechiyo, banished by his father, goes up the mountain and there meets Tanukihime, a raccoon dog princess in human form; the two fall for each other. But the lord at the court has decided to destroy the tanuki forest on the mountain and build a new castle in its place, and the story of both sides knots around that decision. The film proceeds throughout like an operetta; the songs range from operetta to hip hop, the sets make no secret of being stage sets, and the Edo period is never built as though it were real. In Seijun Suzuki’s hundred and eleven minute Japanese film, Zhang Ziyi plays Tanukihime and Joe Odagiri plays Amechiyo. It was completed in 2005, was given a special screening at Cannes and turned out to be Suzuki’s last feature.
