Psycho-Pass: Providence

Naoyoshi Shiotani's 2023 anime is one of the feature films in the Psycho-Pass series. The story takes place in a Japan where people's mental states are measured continuously and the likelihood of committing a crime is given as a number; Akane Tsunemori is now working as an inspector. An incident aboard a foreign vessel turns into a struggle over the work of a researcher outside the system and over whose hands that work will fall into. The film continues the series' central question: how much surveillance is acceptable in order to make a society safe, and who supervises the system. It refers constantly to events told earlier in the series and prepares Akane's later situation. The action is brief and the dialogue heavy. Who it's for: people following Psycho-Pass and viewers who like dystopian science fiction. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series; the film explains nothing.
