What Quitting Is About
An actor withdraws further into drugs and into himself; his family intervenes to bring him back, admits him to hospital and then takes him home, and the place he returns to is no longer what it was. Zhang Yang’s film rests on the real story of Jia Hongsheng, and the extraordinary thing is this: Jia plays himself, his family play themselves, and even the doctors and patients at the institution where he was admitted appear as themselves. That leaves the film standing between fiction and documentary, and gives the restaged scenes a real weight. It drew attention for taking on addiction and mental health directly, two subjects Chinese cinema was not discussing at the time. It played at Venice in 2001 and won the NETPAC award. Its original title alludes to the Beatles song "Yesterday".
