What Getting Home Is About
Zhao and Liu are migrant labourers in their fifties, working a long way from where they come from. Drinking one night, Liu suddenly dies. Zhao once made him a promise: if you die, I will take you home. So he loads the body onto his back and sets out to cross China. Buses, lorries, robbers, money stolen at a hotel, and dozens of people met at the roadside. Zhang Yang's film sits between black comedy and road movie, and underneath the ridiculous situations are migration, poverty and the question of where a dead man belongs. Zhao is played by Zhao Benshan, one of the best-known comic actors in China.
