What Shower Is About

An ageing father and his mentally disabled younger son keep a bathhouse running in Beijing, a place the regulars come to not so much to wash as to spend the day. When the elder son, who left years ago to make money in Shenzhen, turns up without warning, old injuries reopen. At the same time the city is planning to level the whole bathhouse district and put something else there. Zhang Yang's second feature keeps its comic register throughout while making perfectly clear what modernisation erases. It won the FIPRESCI prize at Toronto in 1999.
