What Paths of the Soul Is About
Eleven Tibetans set out from their village to reach Lhasa and from there Mount Kailash. They will cover the road not by walking but by prostration: a few steps, down on the ground, up again, a few more steps. Roughly two thousand kilometres and seven months. Among them are an old man, a pregnant woman and a child. Zhang Yang's film looks like a documentary but is fiction: the cast are not professionals, they play parts close to their own lives, and the crew travelled the road with them. The camera does not intervene, it explains nothing, and there is almost no music. The telling neither defends the faith nor mocks it; it simply shows that daily repetition.
