What Sunflower Is About
Thirty years of one family in Beijing are told through the tension between a father and a son. Nine year old Xiangyang is a happy, unsupervised boy in the lanes when his father, away for years, comes home with a single idea in his head: his son will be a painter. The boy is made to draw every day and resists it, and in the years that follow neither of them manages to make peace or to say anything to the other. The account keeps China’s changing years in the background and tells fatherhood without softening it.
