What Rhyme & Reason Is About

Peter Spirer's 1997 documentary does not describe hip hop from the outside; it asks more than eighty musicians where the music came from, how it turned into a multi billion dollar industry, and what they themselves make of the argument that surrounds it. First generation figures like Kurtis Blow, KRS-One and Chuck D sit in the same film as Dr. Dre, Ice-T, Wu-Tang Clan and the hitmakers of the moment. Some of the footage carries a different weight now: the interview with The Notorious B.I.G. was filmed less than four days before he was murdered. Miramax released it on 5 March 1997 in 280 cinemas.
