What The Legend of 420 Is About
Peter Spirer’s documentary measures the distance between the legal status marijuana has carried in the United States since the 1970s and the wave of decriminalisation now under way. Growers, chefs, entrepreneurs, politicians and celebrities all speak, Tommy Chong and Melissa Etheridge among them, Etheridge describing what the plant did for her during cancer treatment. The question the film keeps returning to is what the business will look like in five years, and whether it stays with the small grower or gets absorbed by big capital. Reviewers were divided: some found it a lively survey of a fast changing situation, others thought the last third slid into advocacy and that the subject was too wide for the film to do more than skim it.
