Nightingale

In Kartal Tibet's film, Kemal Sunal plays Şaban, who comes from his village to Istanbul to earn the bride price. The Hatice he left behind is wanted by the wealthy Zülfo Ağa, who has already won over her father with money, and Şaban arrives in the city having been driven out of the village. In the city a chain of coincidences carries him somewhere else entirely: his voice is noticed and he becomes a famous singer within a short time. The comedy rests on how arbitrary that rise is. What matters is not talent but being in the right place at the right moment, and the managers, producers and journalists around him are perfectly aware of it. Sunal's persona here sits slightly outside the familiar guileless Şaban, and the song sequences and stage performances give the film a different tempo. Ayşen Cansev plays Hatice. Who it is for: viewers who like Kemal Sunal comedies and Yeşilçam's village-to-city stories. Who it is not for: anyone who will object to the period's writing of women and to a plot driven by coincidence.
