What Davaro Is About
Memo comes home from Germany to his village in the southeast meaning to marry the woman he loves. The village expects something else: the man who killed his father cannot be left unavenged. To buy time, Memo promises he will do his duty once the killer is released from prison, and the whole film runs on that postponement. Kartal Tibet builds comedy directly on top of a blood feud, and in doing so takes on the custom itself. Nobody in this story actually wants to kill anyone. Everyone moves because of what somebody else expects. The scenes between Kemal Sunal and Şener Şen are the spine of it, and Sunal plays not a simpleton here but a man boxed in. The music is by Cahit Berkay. The problem it carries into the present is its picture of the southeast. Accent and type are used as comic material, and some of the jokes look cheap now. Who it is for: fans of Turkish popular comedy and the Sunal and Şen pairing. Who it is not for: viewers uneasy with humour built on regional caricature.
